Meet Julianne
My beginning to my final goal
My education spans decades of academic pursuits prior to reaching my final goal, becoming a Life Consultant. I began my career in the Mental Health field 27 years ago, first as a Mental Health Employment Specialist then moving on to becoming a State Rehabilitation Counselor, monitoring Mental Health Case Service Contracts for the next 20 years, while also working p/t for the community college district as an adjunct counselor/vocational instructor. This is where I was introduced to community resourcing. I found my students needed more help than academia, but also with personal issues like homelessness, employment, vocational direction and overall assistance with life’s challenges.
Upon my retirement as a State Rehabilitation Counselor, I decided to return to college to pursue another goal, Marriage and Family Therapy to help gain a more in-depth knowledge of how one’s mental health affects one’s ability to move forward in life because I realized how important it was for clients to have a positive self image, stability and balance in their personal lives prior to beginning work on the original problem they came in with.
I then began my four year internship working with the mental health population. My approach to counseling centered on CBT and Client Centered Counseling. I soon realized that rather than structured evidence based modalities though sometimes quite helpful, the majority of clients appeared to respond better to simple basic empathy, active listening and exploring alternatives to enhance their daily lives by providing unbiased, emotional support and guidance in helping them with realistic problem resolution. Many of the clients basic problems needed to be addressed prior to their moving forward with their mental health and personal issues.
Reality sets in
Though I worked as a Licensed Therapist for a brief period after completing my internship, I soon began to realize I enjoyed my work at the community college so much more than limiting myself to structured counseling modalities. Why? Because I loved providing students with a comprehensive approach to their situations by being able to address all of their needs without limiting their struggles to only mental health needs while so many other important areas in their lives had been overlooked.
After a few years into retirement, I knew it wasn’t for me. I needed to get back to what I truly loved, helping others and community resourcing. But how could I duplicate what I had learned and practiced working at the college. Then, I read about Life Coaching. It seemed to encompass everything I loved and had basically been practicing for the majority of my working life. I’m living proof that one can begin a new chapter at any age and point in one’s life. Since making the decision to get back to what I love doing my life has become meaningful and enriched because I thoroughly enjoy helping my clients fulfill their goals and dreams.
